My City

Boston experienced a major tragedy yesterday. I was at the finish line watching the greatness of the human spirit just an hour before the bombs went off. I've been overcome with the sadness we all feel when something horrific like this happens, but there has been an added sting knowing that it was *my home* that was affected. I won't rehash all of the gory details - I'd rather focus on the beautiful things; the stories of love, service, and compassion that show my city at it's finest.

- There are reports of runners who, finishing the marathon continued running to Massachusetts General Hospital to donate blood. The Red Cross had filled their needs in a matter of hours.

- Many trauma surgeons from MGH were out of town and, upon hearing of the bombings, flew back to Boston to offer their knowledge and expertise.

- In under an hour, 2,000 Boston residents had opened their homes to people in need.

- My school, Boston College, has organized a walk to finish the race for those who couldn't, those who were injured, and those who's lives were lost. See the article here.

- Local restaurants and hotels are providing services for free to people, especially out-of-towners, who were in need to food and shelter.

- Before the smoke had even cleared, many people were running *toward* the blasts to give aid to the victims.

- The inspiring messages from New York.

This is my city. These are just a few examples, but it is a powerful reminder that there is so much good in the world. Especially in times like these, we need to remind ourselves of that good, and the fact that there are more of us that are good than those who are bad. The good will prevail.

If you want some more inspiring stories, here are a few of my favorite articles that have been written since yesterday:
